About.

Totoco brings responsible entrepreneurship, sustainable land management and community development together in a new model for Eco-Tourism. Our Eco-lodge is located high-up on the slopes of Maderas volcano close to a virgin cloud forest and with some of the most breathtaking views you can imagine. Through our Foundation we actively support our local community while we develop a model for sustainable agriculture on our 6 hectare Organic Farm.

We try to embody the ‘People, Profit, Planet’ approach through 3 dedicated organizations. The Eco-lodge is a for-profit responsible business offering 8 exclusive private lodges as well as a swimming pool and a bar & restaurant. The views are spectacular and the virgin forests and shade-grown coffee plantations of the Maderas Volcano Biosphere Reserve are at your doorstep. The Foundation runs health, education and micro-finance programs in our local community while our Organic Farm has reforested our property with over 2000 trees and has a diversified home garden where we practice animal husbandry, maintain vegetable gardens and experiment with alternative techniques such as aquaponics. We employ 21 people across these three organizations and we have been operating for about 8 years now. Martijn Priester and Patricia Pillet co-founded the project with 2 other friends and are the current managers. All of our other team members come from Ometepe.

Organic Farm Internship

Minimum stay: 20 nightsMaximum capacity: 2 people
Food included
We would like to invite volunteers to apply for internships at Totoco Farm. We always have a list of interesting pending projects and experiments that we are interested in developing and we are looking for interns to help facilitate this. The minimum commitment we ask for is 3 months (not 20 days!). Work also includes daily tasks around the Farm. We offer full room & board in simple but private lodging. Interns have access to a communal kitchen & dining area and shared facilities (toilet and bathroom). Specific projects we are looking to initiate in 2017 include Melipona bee-keeping, worm composting and expanding our agroforestry system.
