The Honduras Child Alliance provides educational enrichment and healthy living programs for children and teens in the north-coast beach community of El Porvenir. Blended teams of volunteers from around the world, alongside our Honduran Project Managers, work together in a collective effort. These projects were initiated in response to our awareness that the cycle of poverty is perpetuated through lack of education. The combined energy of our international volunteers, managers, and directors brings together a unique and effective set of skills to support educational and humanitarian projects which target that cycle. As we collaborate to develop opportunities for children in El Porvenir, we welcome volunteers, sponsors, and cooperation with like-minded organizations. Programs include: English & Spanish literacy, computers, arts, intro to science, sports and fitness, group skills/conflict resolution, and more!
Work with our team of 12-15 volunteers to prepare thematic activities, projects, and lessons for each week of the program.
Work in small groups of 2-4 volunteers and 5-7 children at each location.
Commitment is 4.5 days each week, Monday through Friday morning.
Serve a Healthy Snack each day to our kids.
Bring your favorite ideas and activities to share.
Spanish is a plus but not a requirement!
A sense of humor and a sense of responsibility are essential.
Bring a positive attitude and the desire to mentor and be a role model for the children in our programs.
All classrooms are within an easy walk from the volunteer houses so volunteers should be physically fit for a 15-minute walk.
Volunteers work in teams of 2-4 people to staff a morning session and/or afternoon session at 3 locations around the community for a total of 6 groups of students. Volunteers work full days Monday thru Thursday plus Friday a.m. and have 3 classrooms all within walking distance to the volunteer houses.
Volunteers attend planning meetings and are supported by our 2 in-country managers. We have a guided curriculum but there is lots of room for creativity in how you choose to work with your groups. We encourage you to incorporate your own interests and skills to teach with songs, movement, games and other fun activities. Immersion is one of the easiest ways for young children to learn a new language. This program also includes a computer/laptop program where children can learn basic computer skills. Housing is available at our 2 clean, comfortable and secure volunteer houses and costs $35-$42 (USD) per week depending on the length of your stay. The houses each have a full kitchen where volunteers prepare their own food. Generally, there are 5-7 international volunteers staying at each house.
Spanish is a plus but not a requirement. A positive attitude, sense of responsibility, and sense of humor are essential! Teaching experience is super-helpful but not required. Come for 6 weeks to one year! We operate programs year-round.
A large percentage of the children who attend our free classes arrive hungry, and food insecurity is a big problem here. The goal of the Healthy Snacks Program is to provide a locally-sourced and protein-filled snack to each child who attends our free classes. We are working overtime to try to meet the needs of the students in all 6 of our daily groups in 3 locations. You receive a discounted housing rate of $21/week. All COVID-19 precautions are taken at our houses and worksites
A registered dietician/nutritionist provides appropriate recipes for you, and two local women prepare some of the snacks. Our volunteers prepare the rest. The snacks are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. For many of our kids, this may be the most nourishing meal of the day. A secondary goal of the Healthy Snack Program is sustainability, so we have incorporated as many local ingredients as possible into our recipes. The Healthy Snacks Ambassador works directly with the project manager and the dietician/nutritionist to maintain and assess the impact of the program.
Ideally, the candidate has completed, or is in the process of pursuing a degree in: culinary arts, nutrition/dietetics, restaurant and resort management or hospitality, OR has worked as a cooking instructor or chef.
Background in nutrition or public health is helpful.
Comfortable with recipes and cooking (you will not be doing all of the cooking but will be coaching volunteers and community members to do so).
Background in food service or as a chef is helpful.
High comfort-level in coaching others in the cooking process.
Has a good understanding of human nutrition and the basic components of food.
Ability to read and understand food labels.
