Granja Tz'ikin is an organic farm, where we use Permaculture principles to produce delicious foods, and a diverse healthy landscape. Tz'ikin is one of the 20 mayan nawales, it is the nawal of the birds, the guardians of the land and the seed. It symbolises abundance, which and aligns with the goals of our farm. 

It is a space created by a group of friends, united by a passion for nature and farming, who dream of creating something unique, beautiful and inspiring, that can be enjoyed by those who work and live there and all who visit us. 

We are located in Lake Atitlan, in the town of Tuzunana, we offer opportunities volunteer in exchange for great food and learning. We also run regular Permaculture courses with our partners Atitlan Organics.  

We believe a lot in the Permaculture principle 'Get a Yield'. To that end we maintain a bio-intensive veggie garden, which produces all manner of greens, roots and herbs, much of which supplies our farm to table on site restaurant. We also are busy right now planting and setting up the rest of our property with a guild of perennial plants that functions like an edible forest.

We also believe that happy plants and happy animales go together. Here we raise goats, following holistic management principles. They live in our goat'el and eat almost entirely fresh greens from the valley. They provide us with amazing raw milk, yogurt and cheese and of course manure. Alongside them live our beloved chickens, they are in charge of egg production, waste disposal and compost turning.

What else, well we process community grown coffee in partnership with Shrangri-La, and turn all the waste into worm compost and bio-char. We run a nursery which is filled with our favorite native and heirloom plants and we are proud members of the Atitlan Organics Cooperative, which we use to distribute our products all around lake atitlan. If this sounds like a lot, well it is, but the real trick is how each element interacts with the all the others, to see how our farm works, come for a tours, take a course, or sign up for one of our amazing course, run in conjunction with Atitlan Organics.

Here on the farm we run a charming guest house and hostal. It is a a naturally built, eco friendly construction, with wifi, hot water and amazing views. We offer discounted rates, as well as two amazing meals to those wanting to get their hands dirty and help out on the farm. Our volunteers work a half day on the farm, helping out with daily chores, and learning Permaculture by doing.

We are super happy and excited to be taking over the volunteer program from Granja Tzikin, we produce an amazing line of goat dairy, coffee, eggs and cooking greens, which we sell under the Atitlan Organics Cooperative label.

We feel that the volunteers on our farm get to have a great learning experience, as we are implementing and improving so many systems on our young farm. Our volunteers typically take part in and help out in animal care and goat milking, compost production, plant nursery work, veggie gardening, natural building projects, cheese and yogurt making and much more!!

We feel that a stint spent working on our farm as a volunteer, combined with one of our amazing courses, is the fastest way towards Permaculture ninja hood!! It’s too bad you won’t be around for any of the coming courses, although it is possible that we may run a shorter course during your stay.

In any case, it’d be great to have you. The homestay option is currently unavailable, but we have just opened a hostal/guest house on the farm. It a super comfy, naturally built home, located on the farm. The discounted price for volunteers, is Q80 per night, with an awesome farm breakfast and lunch served on work days (Monday to Friday, 8am to 13.00pm).
