The Pamoja Odysse,  on board the Musafir, brings together filmmakers, designers, artists, educators, and community organisers to build bridges and share cultures. At each port we will immerse with the local communities, communicating with each other through art, music and film, resulting in a collaborative celebration of the experience - a  pop up film festival! 10 days sailing and 28 days of community workshops and festival.

Leg 1: Jan 10 -16. Kilifi to Shimoni

Leg 2: Jan 16 - Feb 2. Shimoni to Pemba to Zanzibar

Leg 3: Feb 2- 9. Zanzibar to Mafia Island

First Leg

  • Day 1 – January 10 - Kilifi (L&)

    • Welcome on board the Musafir, anchored in the creek of Kilifi.

    • Familiarise participants with the boat; help to prepare the journey with the crew.

    • Post - dinner group circle

      • Define duty and position on board to share the work

      • Discuss safety on board

      • Propose workshops for projects in the rural village (yoga, discussion, sailing knots, etc.)


  • Day 2 – January 11 - Kilifi (L)

    • Explore the neighbourhood village, engage in workshop with the community, talk with elders for the possibility to organize film festival.

  • Day 3 – January 12 - Kilifi (L)

    • After breakfast, organize the team to set up the film festival. In the evening, welcome the village and project the first film/documentary.

  • Day 4 – January 13 - Kilifi (L)

    • Preparation of the boat and discussion with the community about the projection we had the night before.

  • Day 5 –January 14 - Kilifi to Shimoni (S)

    • In the morning, rise the anchor and start the sailing towards Shimoni.


  • Day 6 – January 15 - Shimoni (SL)

    • Est. arrival time in the morning - relax and enjoy our arrival.

    • Some might want to go and explore the near island of Wasini or the village of Shimoni.

    • Discussion will be held at night concerning the workshop and film festival that we will have the following days.

  • Day 7 – January 16 - Shimoni (L)

    • Explore the neighbourhood village, engage in workshop with the community, talk with elders for the possibility to organize film festival.

  • Day 8 – January 17 - Shimoni (L)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 9 – January 18 - Shimoni (L)

    • Organization of the film festival and the other activity. In the evening, projection of the movie/documentary and discussion with the host community

  • Day 10 – January 19 – Shimoni (L)

    • Preparation of the boat for sailing, clear customs

    • Visit the marine park in Wasini for the day with a local operator

Second Leg

  • Day 11 - January 20 - Shimoni to Pemba (S)

    • Rise the anchor and start sailing toward the Island of Pemba.


  • Day 12 – January 21 - Pemba (SL)

    • Once in Pemba, clear customs and start to explore the island – day to rest and have free activity during the day.

    • In the evening, discussion to be held on board to prepare workshop and film festival.

  • Day 13 – January 22 - Pemba (L&)

    • Explore the neighbourhood village, engage in workshop with the community, talk with elders for the possibility to organize film festival.

  • Day 14 – January 23 - Pemba (L&)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 15 – January 24 - Pemba (L&)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 16 – January 25 – Pemba (L&)

    • Organization of the film festival and the other activity. In the evening, projection of the movie/documentary.

  • Day 17 – January 26 – Pemba (L&)

    • Discussion with the host community about the projection of the previous night.

    • Preparation of the boat and snorkelling.

  • Day 18 – January 27 - Pemba to Zanzibar (S)

    • Rise the anchor and start sailing towards Zanzibar - depending on the wind, arrival in the evening or day after.

  • Day 19 – January 28 - Zanzibar (SL)

    • Day off to explore the island or relax on board.

  • Day 20 – January 29 - Zanzibar (L&)

    • Explore the neighbourhood village, engage in workshop with the community, talk with elders for the possibility to organize film festival.

  • Day 21 – January 30 - Zanzibar (L&)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 22 – January 31 - Zanzibar (L&)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 23 – February 1 - Zanzibar (L&)

    • Organization of the film festival and the other activity. In the evening, projection of the movie/documentary.


Third Leg

  • Day 24 – February 2 - Zanzibar (L&)

    • Discussion of the projection with the local community. Prepare the boat for the next journey, and enjoy another day in beautiful Zanzibar.

  • Day 25 – February 3 - Zanzibar to Mafia Island (S)

    • Rise the anchor and start sailing toward the island of Mafia.

  • Day 26 – February 4 - Mafia Island (SL)

    • Sailing toward the island of Mafia, est arrival by afternoon.

  • Day 27 – February 5 - Mafia Island (L&)

    • Day off to relax on board or explore the island and the marine park.

  • Day 28 – February 6 - Mafia Island (L&)

    • Explore the neighbourhood village, engage in workshop with the community, talk with elders for the possibility to organize film festival.

  • Day 29 – February 7 - Mafia Island (L&)

    • Discuss activity/workshops, divide in groups, and meet the elders and local community for the facilitation of workshop and film festival.

  • Day 30 – February 8 - Mafia Island (L&)

    • Organization of the film festival and the other activity. In the evening, projection of the movie/documentary.


Fourth Leg

  • Day 31 – February 9 - Mafia Island (L&)

    • Discussion with the host community about the projection of the previous night.

    • Preparation of the Musafir for the next voyage - enjoy another day in paradise.

  • Day 32 – February 10 - Okuza Island (SL)

    • Enjoy the day in the secluded island, snorkelling, relaxing, and sun bathing.

  • Day 33 – February 11 - Okuza Island (L)

    • Enjoy another day in Okuza - prepare the boat for next adventure.

  • Day 34 – February 12 - Okuza to Mafia (S)

    • Rise the anchor and sail back toward the island of Mafia.

  • Day 35 – February 13 - Okuza to Mafia (S)

    • Sailing against the wind towards the Island of Mafia.

  • Day 36 – February 14 - Mafia Island (SL)

    • Arrival in the island of Mafia - celebrate the end (for the moment) of the Odyssey.

  • Day 37 – February 15 - Mafia Island (L)

    • Possibility to engage more with the community.

  • Day 38 – February 16 - Departure

    • Departure of the Musafir Family – option to stay and enjoy with the Musafir family.

    1. Both Mombasa and Malindi are an approximately 1 hour drive from Kilifi. We can arrange a cab to pick you up from either airport for $50.

    2. You can fly to and from Nairobi (JKIA and/or Wilson airport) to either Mombasa or Malindi through various airlines:
