Bamboo School with Rodolfo Sáenz as owner and teacher presents the first of the summer Bamboo building workshops.
The objective is to offer knowledge and practice of the basic techniques of construction for making houses and furniture in bamboo.
They are for anyone, over 18, who wants to learn the techniques of cutting, preserving, drying and assembling the guadua and the philostacias aura, either to make buildings or furniture. It is not necessary to have prior knowledge or skills of carpentry or similar.
The course begins on Monday, December 9th and ends on Saturday, December 14th. The arrival is scheduled on Sunday, 8th at night. The departure will be on Sunday 15th after breakfast.
Learn the natural building construction techniques using bamboo and how to create awesome furniture for every day use or advance in craftsmanship skills to take your bamboo work to the next level.
The workshop is for anyone, with or without experience, who wants to learn the techniques of cutting, preserving, drying and assembling bamboo guadua and phyllostachys aurea, either to make buildings or furniture, or who wants to deepen their knowledge by receiving the guidance of a teacher Expert with more than 35 years of experience.
After the workshop, there is the possibility of extending your stay and practicing even more, receiving additional instructions and individual guidance. You can extend your stay for 1, 2 or more weeks (ask for special prices for long-term courses) until you feel you fully master all the techniques.
- Learn about bamboo varieties, harvesting, processing, treatment and curing methods.
- Select the appropriate bamboo from the plantation and cut it.
- Cleaning and curing method.

You will coordinate with the instructor to work on a small furniture piece.
During construction practice, we will work together to make a small part of a cabin or make improvements to the student dormitories.

Rodolfo Saenz began his career as a craftsman, manufacturing furniture and as a builder more than 35 years ago and as teacher more than 12 years. He first learned to work with wood and later received training in a variety of bamboo techniques from a Taiwanese master, who led him to design bamboo furniture combined with hardwoods and other materials.
Originally trained in conventional construction, it changed gears to natural construction methods and design, focusing on bamboo plasters, cob and plasters. Rodolfo is a passionate teacher of sharing his skills and knowledge in sustainable construction and design and has more than twelve years of teaching experience.
In addition to his career and experience in the construction of bamboo and handicrafts, he has cultivated his healing gifts in the form of Reiki and massage therapy

The directions to arrive:
If you use Gps. put in first OROTINA and then San Juan de Mata Turrubares. If not it will lead you over a longer and more difficult road.
I suggest to follow my explanation accurately and you will arrive fine.
First you go to OROTINA. This is the nearest town. IF you come from San José take the exit Orotina and then turn immediately to the left under the bridge, to Turrubares. Or if you come from the beach take the exit Orotina/Tigre and then turn right.
You'll pass first through El Tigre. Following the road you have to cross the Tarcoles Bridge, then follow the road till you arrive at El Llano. This is the point where the road ends in a T. There you take the road to the right and go on for +/- 2 km. At that point you'll see a small chapel at your right hand and in front a small supermarket .And on the corner between other signs, there is one that says: casa bambú. Take the road at your left hand, down the hill. From there it is 300 mts to our house. The house lays at the right side and has a 50mts long entrance. At the beginning of the entrance
You will notice the sign: Bamboo School.
Take the bus to Turrubares in the Orotina Terminal. Get of at the Casona or ask the driver or people for the casa bamboo. From the Casona it is 100mts straight forward. You will see the sign at your right hand ; Bamboo School. Bus hours on Sunday ; 1 .00 pm, you arrive at 1.30 pm. Cost : C600.
You can also take a taxi in Orotina (for C4000 or C4500). Address : El Barro de Turrubares. De la iglesia del Barro 300mts Sur. At your right hand you will see the sign Bamboo School.
