About.

The Solar Living Center is a 12-acre sustainable living training, demonstration, and training center located right along Highway 101. Our classes, internships, events, and Eco-Store offer something for everyone - green job seekers, homeowners, do-it-yourselfers, and professionals interested in photovoltaics, renewable energy, natural building, sustainable living, permaculture, organic gardening, urban homesteading, and more.  We have a Tiny House and campground on site for those that want to stay while taking a course or looking for a inspirational place to visit.

Tumbleweed Tiny House

Minimum stay: 1 nightsMaximum capacity: 2 people
Food Not Included
The Tiny House is a compact 89 square-foot, self-contained building on wheels. It was completed in 2013 by a group of Solar Living Institute (SLI) interns. It is now managed by SLI staff and current interns. Downstairs there is a compact kitchen, including a sink, mini-fridge, and stove-top. There is also a small shower downstairs. Upstairs there is a cozy, full-sized bed. The bed loft is accessed via a wooden ladder and is not handicap accessible. Wireless internet is available on the site under the domain name Real Goods.

NOTE: The toilet for guest use is outside of the house and is the public restroom for the SLC. Please do not use the toilet inside the house as it is not set-up.

Towels and bedding are made from organic materials. There is heat and AC available in the Tiny House. Due to the area, ants are common on the 12-acre grounds. We have noticed them in the house and are dealing with the issue (during the summer months). We ask guests to not leave food on the counters.

We provide coffee, tea, sugar, honey, granola bars, and a few bulk food items. The kitchen has cups, plates, utensils, a french press, and other essentials. The Real Goods store has a selection of snacks and drinks for sale.

Camping

Minimum stay: 1 nightsMaximum capacity: 20 people
Food Not Included
We are lucky in that we meet many types of amazing visitors from all over the world here at the Solar Living Center. Our camping guests range from car/van campers and tent set ups to travelling gypsy bands in RVs! Not your typical campground. RVs, and camping trailers, are welcome to set up in our main parking lot along the fence at the back of the lot. Please note that we do not have hook-ups for RVs.

Feel free to use the lush grounds for picnicking, or build a fire in the firepit next to the ponds (bring your own firewood). Rather than a "destination" campground, camping here is ideal as a "homebase" from which to explore the Mendocino area attractions (wineries and tasting rooms, Redwood hiking trails, restaurants and events), or as an overnight stop while traveling.

Camping amenities include: A rustic camp kitchen, one indoor and one outdoor shower (with hot running water), well-kept public restrooms, beautiful grounds to explore (picnic near the ponds) and a certified organic permaculture garden that usually has an intern or two who can give you a tour or answer questions. Inside the Real Goods store you can shop for gifts and books or get advice on solar and alternative energy. Drinks, snacks and ice cream bars are available for purchase from 10-6pm during summer hours, 10-5pm in winter.

Over the course of their internship, interns are expected to participate in a work/trade agreement for a total of 40 hours per week. Duties include leading general site tours, participating in eco-educational tours for school children, preparing the Tiny House Airbnb for guests, and assisting staff with managing workshops, special events, and our organic produce stand. Interns share responsibilities in routine upkeep of the intern village, the organic gardens, permaculture projects, and building community for the duration of the internship.

Interns participate in solar PV training workshops, sustainable living courses, live onsite in simple, rustic accommodation, eat organic produce grown in the organic gardens and fresh eggs from our chickens, have opportunities to network at special events/meetings/conferences/festivals, a Real Goods store discount, and the benefits of being part of the Solar Living Institute family.

Living In Community

Interns live together onsite in our intern village. The village has a large communal living space (30-foot diameter yurt) equipped with cooking and dining facilities, lounge area, library, and wireless internet access. The village also has both indoor and outdoor mosaic cob showers, an outdoor wood-fired earth oven, seating area, fire pit and chicken coop. Interns living in the village participate in and assist with cooking, cleaning, and other chores as necessary. Guidelines for communal living are provided, however it is each intern's responsibility to actively engage in creating a rewarding intern community life.

As an intern living in community, you will also:
