In the forested hills between the Pyrenees and Mediterranean Sea, Bastarra is a new project on terraced land abandoned 60 years ago, where now mixed oak and beech forests rise within this nature reserve.

Beside an ancient volcano, forest gardens begin to grow in small clearings and on the spoil heaps of charcoal burners, while a simple cabin and house are being built from the wood and clay found on site.

Nearby the old stone farmhouse has been rebuilt beside the spring - a rare occurrence in these dry hills, over which towers a great willow that can be seen from miles around.

This Permaculture project takes its lead from the slowly regenerating forest, aware of the fragility in this rapidly changing climate, and there is always time to sit and listen to the birds or the wind high in the trees, or wander the many tracks along this forgotten sierra, as monks once wandered between its chapels and hermitages.

We are just beginning to find our way here, you'd be welcome to join us.

Touching the Earth

Available: Jun 02 - Aug 25, 2024Minimum stay: 84 nightsMaximum capacity: 5 people
Food included
A 3 month internship where daily meditation opens new perspectives, turning Permaculture Design from an attempt at a transformation of the world to our ideas, to a conformation of ourselves to the ever ongoing way of nature.
Forest Gardening, Natural Building, foraging, hiking and bearing witness to the effects of climate change on the forest after 4 years of drought.
Set in forested hills with views to mountains and seas, this Internship is designed for the adventurous who want to go a little bit further, a little bit deeper into just what we are being called to do and become in the coming, difficult years of climate change.
There will be plenty of time to explore these rugged hills and spot wildlife - it is a photographers paradise.
The internship is the best way I can begin to pass on my Zen, Permaculture and academic background, and the experience of living this last decade in Catalan forests, to help orientate interns to what is of importance and let them then choose their own path.
The price of the Internship is $35/ week for food and basic accommodation. Donations for the project and teacher are gratefully received but not obligatory.
